Ashita no Yume is an interactive roleplaying game set in modern day Japan, in the affluent Tokyo neighborhood of Machida, which revolves around the prestigious private school, Fujiwara University.
One of the oldest and most revered private schools in all of Japan, Fujiwara University was founded during the Meiji Era in 1858 by a member of the powerful Fujiwara Family, Fujiwara Yukifumi. Though initially, Fujiwara University was a school of Western studies, it soon became one of the most influential leaders in Japanese education, a true reflection of its name.
The Fujiwara Family was, and still remains, one of the most powerful and influential families in all of Japan, having a hand in politics and in shaping Japanese culture since the Heian Era. Similarly, Fujiwara University has shaped the structure of the Japanese educational system, particularly in higher education.
With the Westernization of Japan, and the rise of competition in recent times, Fujiwara University decided to also open a private high school in 1992 on its sprawling campus, Fujiwara Junior & Senior High School. About 99% of the graduating class advance to Fujiwara University.
Though Fujiwara caters predominately to the sons and daughters of the country's most affluent families, exceptional students who have demonstrated outstanding performance in the Arts, Sciences, or any other field of academic study, are admitted into the school on an academic scholarship program.
Select students from Japan's countryside, some of whom come from impoverished families, are also admitted based on their level of poverty and need, on a special opportunistic scholarship program that helps to increase the diversity within the school and to provide these special-case students with an opportunity that they would not be able to receive anywhere else. Two students are chosen for this program per year.
Most students opt to live on campus, in Fujiwara's elegant dorms, but many university students choose to live off campus. Due to its close proximity to the metropolitan area of Tokyo, players are encouraged to incorporate Tokyo settings into gameplay, which also allows a certain degree of flexibility in character creation. While Ashita no Yume has a strong emphasis on the student body and staff, a variety of characters who are not related to the school can easily be cultivated in the game.

Ashita no Yume, which stands for "Tomorrow's Dreams", was inspired by the Japanese television shows, Hana Yori Dango, Gokusen, and Nobuta wo Produce. All three shows are high school dramas that illustrate education in Japan. However, it was Hana Yori Dango which provided the game with its true inspiration -- that being, a prestigious private school that mostly catered to the rich and wealthy.
Though the game itself revolves around a school, it must be noted that the school itself revolves around the noble Fujiwara family and all of its regent houses, along with other imperial families. This is the true premises of the game.
